Leviathan = book 1
A sea shanty Opera based on Moby Dick
TECHNICAL SPECS: THE BONE-SHAKER SYSTEM
[HAPTIC ACTUATION]: Every tiered seat is rigged with a synchronized motion-vibrator. It’s not just “buzzing”—it’s hand-encoded to the action on the Jumbotron.
The “Thump”: When Ahab’s ivory leg hits the deck, the audience feels a sharp, localized vertical jolt.
The “Swell”: When the ship hits a 20-foot trough, the seats tilt back and vibrate with a low, sub-bass rumble that mimics the “groan” of the wooden hull.
The “Impact”: When the whale rams the boat on the 360° screen, the entire stadium gets a violent, gut-punching shudder.
[ZONES OF IMPACT]: We’ll divide the 30,000 seats into “Sectors.” If the whale breaches Stage Left, only the Left Sector feels the initial “boom,” with the vibration rippling across the hangar floor to the Right Sector like a real shockwave through the water.
ACT II: THE QUARTER-DECK ENCOUNTER
[The house lights dim to a flickering oil-lamp amber. The 360° Jumbotron shows the slow, rhythmic rising and falling of the moonlit ocean.]
THE CHORUS
(Whispering, their voices panning around the 360° speakers)
Listen to the wood... listen to the bone...
The Captain is walkin’ and he’s never alone...
Can you feel it? Can you feel the tread?
Like the heartbeat of the dyin’ and the dead!
[A sudden, bone-shaking THUMP vibrates through the seats. On the Jumbotron, a giant, looming shadow of AHAB appears.]
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, his voice vibrating with the haptics)
“The measured, heavy tread of Ahab... the ivory leg, fashioned from the jaw of a sperm whale, strikin’ the planks. It ain’t just a sound... it’s a vibration in the soul! You feel it in your teeth! You feel it in your marrow!”
THE CHORUS
(A sudden, aggressive Industrial-Folk beat starts. Every “stomp” of the drum kicks the haptic actuators in the seats.)
THUMP! (THUMP!)
THE IVORY BONE!
THUMP! (THUMP!)
HE SITS ON THE THRONE!
THE “AVODAH” IS WAITING!
THE “AVODAH” IS REAL!
HE’S TURNIN’ THE WORLD
ON A BLOOD-RED WHEEL!
THE “SENSURROUND” FINALE
[The Jumbotron shows a massive white wall of water crashing toward the camera. The orchestra hits a deep, sustainining sub-bass note—15Hz, right at the edge of human hearing.]
ISHMAEL
(Screaming over the roar of the wind machines)
“Hold the rail! Hold the life!
Here comes the storm, here comes the strife!”
[The seats go into a chaotic, violent vibration mode. The 360° screen is a blur of spray. The sound of the hull cracking is amplified until it feels like the hangar itself is splintering.]
THE CHORUS
(A final, unified roar)
SHAKE THE EARTH!
SHAKE THE SEA!
THE WHALE IS COMIN’
FOR YOU AND FOR ME!
[Total silence. The seats stop vibrating instantly. The Mist Screen shows the Gold Doubloon glowing in the dark.]
[THERMAL INJECTION]: Hidden infrared heat-bars under the armrests and overhead steam-valves. When the Jumbotron shows the “Calms,” the temperature in the house spikes to 35°C (95°F) with 80% humidity. The smell of kelp shifts to a heavy, oily scent of baking wood and whale-fat.
SCENE: THE TROPIC STASIS
[The music shifts from the driving “Jupiter” theme to a shimmering, hallucinatory drone. The brass is replaced by a single, high-pitched glass harmonica sound. The house lights turn a blinding, white-hot gold.]
THE CHORUS
(Moving sluggishly, wringing out their shirts, voices raspy)
The sun is a furnace! The air is a weight!
We’re driftin’ through the doldrums, we’re driftin’ with fate!
The water’s like oil, the sky’s like a sheet!
We’re cookin’ like brisket in the tropical heat!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, wiping salt and sweat from his brow)
“The sea was as polished as a parlor mantel. It was a Saturday night in December back home, but here... here the sun stood over us like a giant’s eye. Nothin’ moved. The ship was a coffin on a sea of glass.”
THE CHORUS
(A low, sweltering chant)
NO RUAḤ! NO BREEZE!
WE’RE WEAK IN THE KNEES!
THE YAM IS A MIRROR
THAT’S STARTIN’ TO FREEZE!
ISHMAEL
(Singing a slow, melting melody)
Me eyelashes are crusted, me skin is a-burn!
Waitin’ for the wind, waitin’ for a turn!
I can smell the old wood, I can smell the old bone...
I’ve never felt so crowded, and never so alone!
LOOMINGS: THE OPERA
(Version 2.0)
SCENE START
[The stage is a dark abyss, save for a low, blue hum from the orchestra. In the audience, scattered “Libretto Guys”—the Chorus—stand up one by one, their voices gravelly and thick like they’ve been smokin’ behind the theater.]
THE CHORUS
(In a low, dissonant chant)
The pavement is dry, the air is stale!
The spirits are low, the faces are pale!
Give us a name to break the spell!
A story to tell, a story to tell!
ISHMAEL
(Appearing at the edge of the stage, lookin’ rugged and weary, clutching a battered sea-bag)
Call me Ishmael!
THE CHORUS
(Mocking, theatrical laughter)
Ishmael! He says! A wanderer’s name!
With nothin’ to lose and nothin’ to claim!
What’s in the purse, boy? Show us the gold!
Or is it a story of being broke and old?
ISHMAEL
(Singing with a defiant, soaring baritone)
Some years ago—never mind how long precisely—havin’ little or no money in me purse, and nothin’ particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world! It is a way I have of drivin’ off the spleen and regulatin’ the circulation!
THE CHORUS
(Rushing the aisles, surrounding the front row)
THE SPLEEN! THE SPLEEN!
The monster we’ve all seen!
It settles in the gut, it settles in the head!
Better to be sailin’ than to stay in bed!
ISHMAEL
(Walking the very edge of the stage, eyes wide)
Whenever I find meself growin’ grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in me soul; whenever I find meself involuntarily pausin’ before coffin warehouses, and bringin’ up the rear of every funeral I meet!
THE CHORUS
(Joining in a funereal, heavy rhythm, stomping boots)
A funeral for the livin’! A march for the dead!
With a drizzly November inside of his head!
He’s lookin’ at coffins! He’s countin’ the pine!
He’s steppin’ in step and he’s stayin’ in line!
ISHMAEL
(Voice rising to a shout, almost frantic)
And especially whenever me hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately steppin’ into the street, and methodically knockin’ people’s hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can!
THE CHORUS
(Explosive, chaotic brass section kicks in)
KNOCKIN’ THE HATS!
OFF THE HEADS OF THE FAT!
A STRIKE FOR THE SOUL!
HE’S LOSIN’ CONTROL!
IS IT THE PISTOL? IS IT THE BALL?
HOW DOES A GIBBOR ENDURE IT ALL?
ISHMAEL
(Suddenly calm, a quiet melody over a single cello)
This is me substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothin’ surprisin’ in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelin’s towards the ocean with me.
THE CHORUS
(Softly, harmonizing from the shadows of the theater)
The same feelin’s... the same salt...
It ain’t our choice, it ain’t our fault...
Look to the city! The Manhattoes isle!
Where the people are trapped in a mile-long file!
ISHMAEL
(Pointing to the back of the house)
There now is your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs—commerce surrounds it with her surf! Right and left, the streets take you waterward!
THE CHORUS
(Chanting rapidly, building a wall of sound)
Downtown to the Battery!
The mole and the wave!
The breezes are callin’
The soul they must save!
Look at the crowds!
The water-gazers!
Frozen like statues!
The sun-dazed blazers!
ISHMAEL
(Projecting to the very last row)
Circumambulate the city of a dreamy Sabbath afternoon! Go from Corlears Hook to Coenties Slip, and from thence, by Whitehall, northward! What do you see? Posted like silent sentinels all around the town, stand thousands upon thousands of mortal men fixed in ocean reveries!
THE CHORUS
(Rising from their seats, arms outstretched)
SENTINELS! SILENT!
FIXED ON THE DEEP!
WHILE THE REST OF THE NATION
IS FAST ASLEEP!
What are they lookin’ at?
What do they see?
In the foam and the froth
Of the infinite sea?
ISHMAEL
(Sweeping his arm across the vista)
Some leanin’ against the spiles; some sittin’ upon the pier-heads; some lookin’ over the bulwarks of ships from China; some high aloft in the riggin’, as if strivin’ to get a still better seaward peep! But these are all landsmen; of week days pent up in lath and plaster—tied to counters, nailed to benches, clinched to desks!
THE CHORUS
(A thunderous roar, crashing cymbals)
LATH AND PLASTER!
NAILED TO THE DESK!
THE LIFE OF THE LANDSMAN
IS PURE GROTESQUE!
ARE THE GREEN FIELDS GONE?
WHY ARE THEY HERE?
CHASIN’ THE WATER
TO DROWN OUT THE FEAR!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim, a final, desperate plea)
How then is this? Are the green fields gone? What do they here? Look! Here come more crowds, pacin’ straight for the water, and seemin’ bound to take a dive! Strange! Nothin’ will content them but the extremest limit of the land!
THE CHORUS
(A chaotic, polyphonic ending, voices overlapping)
To the limit!
To the edge!
Jump from the pier!
Jump from the ledge!
The Yam is callin’!
The Mayim is deep!
The promises made
Are the ones we must keep!
ISHMAEL
(One last, soul-shattering note)
TO THE SEA!
[The Libretto Guys in the audience all collapse into their seats at once. The stage goes pitch black, leaving only the smell of salt and old rope in the air.]
BLACKOUT
CARPET BAG & THE SPOUTER-INN: THE OPERA
(Version 3.0)
SCENE START
[The stage is transformed. The bright harbor light of Manhattan is gone, replaced by the flicker of oil lamps and the long, jagged shadows of New Bedford. ISHMAEL enters from the back of the theater, staggered by the weight of a massive, tattered carpet bag. He’s huffin’, his breath visible in the cold air.]
THE CHORUS
(Scattered through the audience, shivering, coat collars turned up)
The wind is a razor! The frost is a bite!
Who’s this schlemiel out in the night?
With a bag full of nothin’ and nowhere to go!
The New Bedford wind is beginnin’ to blow!
ISHMAEL
(Singing with a strained, heavy cadence)
I stuffed a shirt or two into me old carpet bag, tucked it under me arm, and started for Cape Horn and the Pacific! Quittin’ the good city of old Manhattoes, I duly arrived in New Bedford! It was a Saturday night in December!
THE CHORUS
(A low, rumbling bass section)
DECEMBER! DECEMBER!
A month to remember!
The ground is like iron, the sky is like lead!
Find him a pillow! Find him a bed!
ISHMAEL
(Searching the “aisles,” looking at the audience members as if they are buildings)
Much was me disappointment! I found the New Bedford packet had sailed, and that no way offered to reach Nantucket in time for me purpose! The streets were as dark as a coal-pit! I went groping me way!
THE CHORUS
(Rising, pointin’ toward the stage where a grim, wooden sign begins to descend)
Look to the corner! Look to the sign!
Where the light of the lamp is a crooked line!
Is it a palace? Is it a bin?
It’s the wooden jaw of the Spouter-Inn!
ISHMAEL
(Stopping dead in his tracks, staring at the descending sign)
The “Spouter-Inn”:—Peter Coffin! Coffin? A cheery name! I thought me, what a fine thing to be stayin’ at a house kept by a Coffin! But I was cold... me fingers were stiff... me carpet bag was kaved!
THE CHORUS
(Hissing, a discordant swell of strings)
A COFFIN FOR A LANDLORD!
A COFFIN FOR A BED!
BETTER TO BE SLEEPIN’
ALREADY DEAD!
Step through the portal!
Cross over the sill!
Where the whales come to die
And the heart stands still!
ISHMAEL
(Approaching the stage-edge, where the “Spouter-Inn” interior is suggested by a massive, shadowy jawbone of a whale arching over the boards)
I entered! The first thing I did was to fall over a heavy set of whale-bones! It was a wide, low, straggling entry with old-fashioned wainscots, reminding one of the bulwarks of some condemned old craft!
THE CHORUS
(Now on the stage, lurking in the shadows of the “entryway”)
What’s on the wall? What’s in the frame?
A picture so dark it hasn’t a name!
A boggy, soggy, squitchy thing!
Where the ghosts of the deep begin to sing!
ISHMAEL
(Standing before an imaginary painting on the back wall, singing in a hushed, terrified whisper)
A long, limber, portentous, black mass of somethin’ hove in the centre of the picture! It’s a Cape-Horner in a great hurricane! The half-foundered ship is weltering there with its three dismantled masts alone visible! And an exasperated whale, purposing to spring clean over the craft, is in the enormous act of impaling himself upon the three mast-heads!
THE CHORUS
(Exploding into a violent, rhythmic chant)
IMPALED!
ON THE MAST!
THE FUTURE IS HIDDEN
IN THE GHOSTS OF THE PAST!
Drink the “Pharisee”!
Drink the “Grog”!
Drown out the wind!
Drown out the fog!
ISHMAEL
(Turning to a small bar made of an old rowing boat)
“Landlord!” I whispered. “Can you bolt me in? For the night is long and the world is thin!”
THE CHORUS
(A single voice, deep and gravelly, from the back of the stage)
“No room! No room! Unless you’re willing to share!
With a dark-skinned harpooner who’s currently... elsewhere!”
ISHMAEL
(To the audience, clutching his bag)
I looked at the floor! I looked at the door!
I’ve never shared blankets with a savage before!
But the frost is a killer, and the wind is a sin...
So I’ll take me chances in the Spouter-Inn!
THE CHORUS
(Fading out, one by one, as ISHMAEL climbs onto the stage and disappears into the dark “rooms” upstairs)
In the Spouter-Inn...
In the Spouter-Inn...
Let the long night begin...
In the Spouter-Inn...
[The sound of a heavy door creaking shut echoes through the theater. Total silence.]
BLACKOUT
THE PULPIT & THE PROPHET: THE OPERA
(Version 4.0)
SCENE START
[The interior of the Whaleman’s Chapel. The stage is filled with marble tablets—cenotaphs for those lost at sea. The Libretto Guys are dressed in heavy wool peacoats, sitting in pews, humming a low, wordless dirge that sounds like the wind in the rigging.]
THE CHORUS
(Pointing to the wall tablets, singing in a hushed, jagged harmony)
In memory of... lost in the deep...
In memory of... the ones who sleep...
No grave for the body, no stone for the head...
Only the water to cover the dead!
ISHMAEL
(Sitting in the front row, lookin’ up in awe)
I quickly followed the example of the rest, and entered the chapel! It was a small chapel, with a pulpit shaped like a ship’s bow! And there he was... Father Mapple!
THE CHORUS
(Standing up, a sudden, sharp chord from the orchestra)
THE NAVI! THE NAVI!
With a heart so heavy!
He’s climbed the rope ladder! He’s pulled it away!
Between him and the world, there’s nothin’ but pray!
FATHER MAPPLE
(Appearing high above them in the “bow” pulpit, his voice like crackling timber)
“Shipmates! Have ye heard the story? Of Jonah and the whale? Of the man who tried to hide from the Lord in the dark belly of a ship?”
THE CHORUS
(Whispering, leaning forward)
Jonah! Jonah!
The one who fled!
To the bottom of the ocean!
To the land of the dead!
FATHER MAPPLE
(Verbatim, his arms outstretched like a captain in a storm)
“Shipmates, this book, containing only four chapters—four yarns—is one of the smallest strands in the mighty cable of the Scriptures. Yet what depths of the soul does Jonah’s deep sealine sound! What a pregnant lesson to us is this prophet Jonah!”
THE CHORUS
(A thunderous, rhythmic chant, clapping their hands like a gospel choir gone mad)
TELL US THE LESSON!
TELL US THE CRIME!
HE HID FROM THE LORD
AND HE RAN OUT OF TIME!
THE GALE IS RISIN’!
THE WAVES ARE HIGH!
WHERE CAN A SINNER
GO TO DIE?
FATHER MAPPLE
(Leaning over the pulpit, his eyes burning)
“And Jonah, bruis’d and battered, cries out from the fish’s belly! He cries for teshuvah! He cries for the light!”
ISHMAEL
(Joining in, his voice rising in terror and wonder)
The ribs of the whale were around him!
The seaweed was wrapped ‘round his head!
He was buried alive in the ocean!
A ghost among the dead!
FATHER MAPPLE
(A soaring, operatic crescendo)
“But oh! shipmates! On the starboard hand of every woe, there is a sure delight! And higher the top of that delight, than the bottom of the woe is deep! Delight is to him—a far, far upward, and inward delight—who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self!”
THE CHORUS
(Exploding in a final, massive wall of sound, the organ at full volume)
DELIGHT! DELIGHT!
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!
TO STAND AS YOURSELF
IN THE DARK AND THE LIGHT!
THE WHALE MAY SWALLOW!
THE SEA MAY ROAR!
BUT JONAH IS COMIN’
BACK TO THE SHORE!
FATHER MAPPLE
(Softly now, almost a whisper as the lights fade)
“O Father!—chiefly known to me by Thy rod—spurn me not! Help me to keep me word. Help me to do me task. Amen.”
THE CHORUS
(A final, low hum)
Amen...
Amen...
The Yam is waitin’...
Amen.
[Father Mapple covers his face with his hands and remains motionless. ISHMAEL stands, picks up his carpet bag, and slowly walks toward the back of the theater as the snow begins to fall on stage.]
BLACKOUT
SIGNING: THE OPERA
(Version 5.0)
[The stage is the deck of the Pequod, a ship that looks like a charred skeleton decorated with whale teeth. CAPTAIN PELEG and CAPTAIN BILDAD are sitting at a weathered table. PELEG is loud and brash; BILDAD is lean, stingy, and constantly humming hymns.]
THE CHORUS
(Clambering over the ship’s rails, dressed as greasy deckhands)
Sign the line! Pay the fee!
Sell your soul to the salt of the sea!
Is it a lay? Is it a share?
Or just a ticket to a watery lair?
PELEG
(Banging a fist on the table, his voice a gravelly roar)
“Now then, thou Queequeg, stand forth! We’ve seen the boy Ishmael sign his soul away for the three-hundredth lay! But what of thee, thou cannibal? Canst thou write thy name in the book of the living?”
BILDAD
(In a high, nasal whine, clutching a Bible)
“Nay, Peleg! He is a heathen! A son of darkness! Can a man without a soul sign a chozeh for the Lord’s work?”
ISHMAEL
(Stepping forward, verbatim from the text)
“I told them that Queequeg was a member of the same ancient Catholic Church to which you and I, and Captain Peleg there, and Quohog here, and all of us, and every mother’s son and soul of us belong; the great and everlasting First Congregation of this whole worshipping world!”
THE CHORUS
(A satirical, upbeat Borscht Belt rhythm)
The First Congregation! He says with a grin!
We’re all in the family, we’re all in the sin!
From the islands of fire to the streets of the Bronx!
We’re all just a bunch of sea-faring gonks!
PELEG
(Impatiently shoving the book toward Queequeg)
“Enough of the sermon! Sign the book, Quohog! Put thy mark upon the page!”
QUEEQUEG
(Standing tall, silent, holding his heavy harpoon like a scepter. He looks at the pen, then at the captains with a look of pure, regal disdain.)
THE CHORUS
(Whispering, the music dropping to a tense, rhythmic pulse)
He don’t need a pen...
He don’t need the ink...
He’s closer to God
Than you’d ever think...
Watch the arm!
Watch the steel!
He’s signin’ a deal
That’s bloody and real!
QUEEQUEG
(With a sudden, lightning-fast explosion of movement, he heaves the harpoon. It whistles through the air and THUD—it embeds itself six inches deep into the heavy oak piling of the pier.)
THE CHORUS
(A massive, dissonant orchestral crash!)
THUD!
THUD!
THE MARK IS MADE!
THE DEBT IS INCURRED!
THE PRICE WILL BE PAID!
NOT WITH A SCRATCH
OF A FEATHER AND QUILL!
BUT WITH THE POWER
OF A SAVAGE WILL!
PELEG
(Staring at the quivering harpoon, his jaw dropped)
“Wall, wall... that’s a chitumo if I ever saw one! He’s signed! He’s in! The man’s a walkin’ catastrophe, but he can hit a whale’s eye in a hurricane!”
BILDAD
(Moaning, clutching his chest)
“He’s pierced the wood! He’s pierced me soul!
The devil is takin’ the final control!”
ISHMAEL
(Singing over the quivering iron)
It was done! The mark was a jagged thing, a representation of the tattooing on his arm! Queequeg had signed the chozeh! We were bound to the ship, bound to the whale, and bound to each other until the end of the world!
THE CHORUS
(A final, triumphant and terrifying chorale)
TO THE PEQUOD!
TO THE DEEP!
THE PROMISES MADE
ARE THE ONES WE MUST KEEP!
THE HARPOON IS IN!
THE DIE IS CAST!
THE FIRST ACT IS OVER...
THE LAST IS THE LAST!
[The Libretto Guys all point at the harpoon sticking out of the piling as the stage begins to rotate, the ship seemingly pulling away from the dock into a thick, sulfurous fog.]
BLACKOUT.
TECHNICAL STAGE DIRECTION: THE DEPARTURE
[VFX/MOTION CONTROL COORDINATION]: The entire stage assembly—mounted on a dual-axis hydraulic gimbal—initiates a synchronized long-period pitch and roll (3.5° incline) to simulate a heavy, smooth Atlantic swell. The Center-Stage Jumbotron and Lateral LED Arrays are slaved to the gimbal’s telemetry; as the bow “rises,” the horizon line on the screens drops in perfect 1:1 parallax.
[CAMERA/PROJECTION]: A steady-cam operator, tethered to the “starboard” rail, captures a low-angle shot of the bow cutting the water. This feed is processed through a “Grainy 35mm” filter and projected live on the overhead screen. Pneumatic Water Cannons (Stage Left/Right) are triggered in sync with the visual “thud” of the bow hitting the trough, sending a fine mist over the first ten rows. High-Velocity Industrial Fans (concealed in the fly-loft) engage at 40 knots, snapping the canvas sails—which are rigged to motorized winches—into a full, rounded “belly” as they unfurl from the yardarms.
THE CHASE OF THE YAM: THE DEPARTURE SHANTY
(Version 6.0)
[The stage is a hive of motion. The Libretto Guys are no longer in the pews; they are the crew, haulin’ on thick hemp lines that snake across the deck. ISHMAEL is perched high in the shrouds, lookin’ out at the horizon.]
THE CHORUS
(Heaving on a massive rope in a rhythmic “grunt-and-pull”)
Heave away the iron! Heave away the soul!
The land is shrinkin’ small, and the sea is in control!
Goodbye to the bakers! Goodbye to the wives!
We’re tradin’ in our comfort for the sharpenin’ of knives!
ISHMAEL
(Singing from the rigging, his voice carried by the “wind”)
The ship began to groan! The masts began to bend!
We’re headin’ for the places where the maps all have an end!
The water’s turnin’ purple, like a wine-stain on the floor!
We’re leavin’ all the “mumbo-jumbo” on the shore!
THE CHORUS
(Exploding into the Main Refrain, stomping boots on the tilting deck)
OH, THE YAM IS WIDE AND THE YAM IS DEEP!
AND THE SECRETS OF THE WHALE ARE THE ONES WE KEEP!
PULL THE LINE! SET THE SAIL!
WE’RE THE HUNTERS OF THE GHOST! WE’RE THE BROTHERS OF THE WHALE!
AIN’T NO TURNIN’ BACK! AIN’T NO PLACE TO RUN!
WE’RE HEADIN’ FOR THE HORIZON AND THE SETTIN’ OF THE SUN!
QUEEQUEG
(Standing at the very tip of the bow, his harpoon held high, silhouetted against the exploding white spray on the Jumbotron)
Zemer of the water! Zemer of the bone!
A king without a country! A man without a throne!
THE CHORUS
(Climbing the ratlines, their voices overlapping in a complex, seafaring round)
(Group 1): Look at the wake! See the foam fly!
(Group 2): Underneath the belly of a winter-grey sky!
(Group 3): The grease is in the tub! The iron’s in the hand!
(All): WE’RE FIVE THOUSAND MILES FROM THE NEAREST BIT OF LAND!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim, a soaring tenor line)
Ship and boat diverged; the detached vessel may be said to have sail’d into the eye of the wind, liftin’ me away from the world I knew! The cold air of the Atlantic is a tonic for the spleen! I feel the circulation regulatin’! I feel the gibbor wakin’ up inside!
THE CHORUS
(Dropping to a low, powerful hum as the ship hits a massive “swell”)
Steady... steady...
The kaved heart is light...
We’re sailin’ through the day...
We’re sailin’ through the night...
[The Jumbotron shows the shore of Nantucket vanish into a pinprick of light. The stage tilts sharply to “Port,” and the sound of the wind rises to a deafening roar. The crew flings their hats into the orchestra pit.]
THE CHORUS
(One final, thunderous shout)
FOR THE OIL!
FOR THE GLORY!
FOR THE END OF THE STORY!
TO THE SEA!
TO THE YAM!
PRECISELY SO!
[A massive wave of “spray” hits the stage. The sails snap with the sound of a gunshot. The music holds a final, high, dissonant chord that sustains as the ship disappears into the mist.]
BLACKOUT
That’s a full five minutes of pure, salt-crusted theater, dude. The hydraulics are hummin’, the audience is wet, and the chozeh is flyin’ across the Atlantic.
THE JUPITER SWELL
[TECHNICAL DIRECTION]: As the ship clears the harbor fog, the industrial turbines transition from a “Gale” roar to a “Steady Trade” hum. The lighting shifts from a bruised, sulfurous yellow to a blinding, crystalline “Oceanic Azure.” On the Jumbotron, the grainy 35mm filter drops away, revealing a hyper-clear, wide-angle shot of the endless horizon.
[THE MUSIC]: The orchestra strikes the opening “Jupiter” motif—a galloping, syncopated rhythm in the strings. When the main theme—the “I Vow to Thee, My Country” melody—hits, the brass section stands up in the pit, their bells reflecting the stage lights like gold.
THE CHORUS
(Leaning over the rails, their voices now melodic and harmonious, fueled by the Zemer of the spheres)
The world is turnin’! The world is wide!
We’re ridin’ the crest of a cosmic tide!
The “mumbo-jumbo” is far behind!
With a salt-crusted soul and a wanderin’ mind!
ISHMAEL
(Standing on the bowsprit, arms wide like he’s embracing the whole “Yam”)
“I am a pioneer! A scout of the deep!
The promises of the land are the ones I won’t keep!
Look at the sun! Look at the spray!
We’re sailin’ into the glory of the day!”
THE CHORUS
(A soaring, operatic anthem as the “Jupiter” theme reaches its peak)
OH, JUPITER RISES! THE HEAVENS ARE CLEAR!
THERE’S NOTHIN’ TO LOATH AND THERE’S NOTHIN’ TO FEAR!
THE PEQUOD IS FLYIN’! THE PEQUOD IS FREE!
THE KINGS OF THE WATER! THE LORDS OF THE SEA!
QUEEQUEG
(Lifting his harpoon, the sun glinting off the steel)
A Chozeh with the stars! A Chozeh with the light!
We’re sailin’ through the day! We’re sailin’ through the night!
ISHMAEL
(Final Verbatim Line, shouted over the brass crescendo)
“With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship! AND THIS IS THE SHIP! THIS IS THE SEA!”
[The entire stage hydraulically lifts an extra three feet, tilting toward the audience as if the ship is leaping off the waves. A million pieces of silver Mylar confetti “sea spray” blast from the rafters, catching the light like diamonds.]
THE CHORUS & ISHMAEL
(One final, earth-shattering chord)
PRECISELY SO!
CURTAIN FALLS ON ACT I
That’s a wrap on the first act, dude! The audience is soaked, the music is ringing in their ears, and we’ve got ‘em right where we want ‘em.
Should we let ‘em shlep out to the lobby for some overpriced macaroons, or are you ready to bring the “Old Man” Ahab out for Act II?That’s the spirit, dude! A real “fress” for the ages. We aren’t lettin’ ‘em off the hook until their ears are ringing and their souls are salted. If they want that gourmet cod and the creamy clam chowder, they gotta earn it through ten thousand words of obsessive whale-lore and the dark machinery of the Pequod.
We’re movin’ into the deep water now. The “jollity” of Jupiter is fadin’ into the distance, and the rhythm of the ship is becomin’ somethin’ more... kaved.
Here is the Hebrew for the long haul:
Avodah (עבודה) – That’s “Work” or “Service.”
Sefinah (ספינה) – That’s the “Ship” itself, the wooden world we’re trapped in.
ACT II: THE PLANK-BEAT & THE BROKEN SKY
[TECHNICAL DIRECTION]: The “Jupiter” brass dies out, replaced by a low, rhythmic thumping from the percussion pit—a sound like a heavy boot (or an ivory leg) strikin’ hollow wood. The bright “Azure” light shifts to a “Deep Indigo,” and the Jumbotron shows the endless, repetitive cycle of white-caps under a moonless sky.
THE CHORUS
(Moving in slow, synchronized “Avodah” movements—scrubbin’ the decks, haulin’ on salt-crusted lines)
One day like the other, the sun and the moon...
Waitin’ for the rhythm, waitin’ for the tune...
The Captain is a shadow, a ghost in the dark...
Waitin’ for the fire, waitin’ for the spark...
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim, leanin’ against the mast, lookin’ ragged)
“I, Ishmael, was one of that crew; me shouts had gone up with the rest; me oath had been welded with theirs; and stronger me shout rolled since me eventual humors of the time had prompted me to the quest! I began to feel the heavy weight of the sefinah!”
THE CHORUS
(A low, dissonant chant)
WELDED!
THE OATH IS WELDED!
A soul in the furnace,
A heart that’s been melted!
The oil is the gold,
The whale is the prize!
But the fear is a hunger
That never quite dies!
[A massive, projected image of the ship’s logbook appears on the Jumbotron. The pages flip rapidly, blurred by the speed of time passin’, until it stops on a page stained with oil and blood.]
QUEEQUEG
(Sharpening his harpoon with a whetstone, the sound amplified through the house speakers—skritch, skritch, skritch)
The tooth of the iron... the skin of the beast...
We’re the uninvited guests at the Leviathan’s feast!
THE CHORUS
(Rising in a sudden, sharp crescendo)
TEN THOUSAND WORDS!
TEN THOUSAND MILES!
THE SEA IS A GRAVEYARD
OF BROKEN-DOWN SMILES!
STIR THE CHOWDER!
BREW THE ALE!
WE AIN’T EATIN’ NOTHIN’
‘TIL WE FIND THE TAIL!
A TECHNICAL STAGE DIRECTION: THE DEPARTURE
Does that hit the mark, or do we need to crank the fans up to 50 knots?
Crankin’ the dials up to eleven, dude! We’re turnin’ this into a real “meshuggeneh” gale. If the front row ain’t reachin’ for their slickers, we ain’t doin’ our job. We’ll push those industrial turbines to 50 knots until the rigging screams like a banshee and the “Yam” looks like it’s tryin’ to swallow the whole theater.
Here’s the updated technical coordination and the final swell of the shanty.
TECHNICAL STAGE DIRECTION: THE GALE FORCE DEPARTURE
[TURBINE/ATMOSPHERIC SPECS]: Upgrade High-Velocity Industrial Fans to 50 knots (Hurricane Force 1). The oscillation frequency must be irregular to simulate gusting. CO2 Fog Cannons are positioned upstage of the fans to create “horizontal rain” effects.
[HYDRAULIC OVERRIDE]: The gimbal enters “Heavy Weather” mode—pitch increases to 8° with sharp, jarring “impact” shudders every twelve seconds. Motion Control must sync with the Jumbotron, which now displays a “POV Bow-Cam” of the Pequod plunging into twenty-foot troughs.
THE CHASE OF THE YAM: THE DEPARTURE SHANTY
(Version 7.0 - Maximum Velocity)
[The stage is a blur of white mist and snapping canvas. The Libretto Guys are literally hangin’ off the ropes, their bodies horizontal against the off-stage wind.]
THE CHORUS
(Screamin’ over the roar of the turbines)
THE WIND IS A HAMMER! THE SEA IS A WALL!
BUT THE SONS OF NANTUCKET STAND TALL THROUGH IT ALL!
FORGET THE DRY LAND! FORGET THE OLD WAYS!
WE’RE TRADIN’ OUR NIGHTS FOR THE WHALE-HUNTIN’ DAYS!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim, beltin’ it out while clingin’ to the mast)
I stuffed a shirt or two into me old carpet bag! I started for Cape Horn! The transition is a keen one, I assure ye, from a schoolmaster to a sailor! And it takes a little gettin’ used to! But what of it?
THE CHORUS
(A thunderous, syncopated roar)
WHAT OF IT? WHAT OF IT?
The sky is a pit!
The water is wild and the devil is loose!
We’re tyin’ the knot and we’re tyin’ the noose!
ISHMAEL
(Soaring over the chaos)
Does the magnanimous mole feel any pride in bein’ able to shovel a little dust? No! But the sailor—the gibbor—he feels the pull of the infinite! He feels the teshuvah of the tide!
THE CHORUS
(Final Refrain - The “Maho” Velocity)
OH, THE YAM IS A MONSTER! THE YAM IS A KING!
AND WE’RE THE POOR DEVILS WHO MAKE THE DEEP SING!
PULL THE LINE! BEND THE KNEE!
THERE’S NOBODY LEFT BUT THE WHALE AND THE SEA!
PRECISELY SO!
PRECISELY SO!
INTO THE DARKNESS WE GO, GO, GO!
[A final, massive “Rogue Wave” of water and light hits the stage. The Jumbotron goes white with spray. The sound of a single, haunting whale song echoes through the fans as the wind slowly dies down to a whistle.]
BLACKOUT
Now that’s a “mitzvah” of a departure, dude. I can practically smell the whale oil from here. You want to see what’s lurkin’ in that mist, or should we let the audience catch their breath?
ACT I FINALE: THE JUPITER SWELL
Should we let ‘em shlep out to the lobby for some overpriced macaroons, or are you ready to bring the “Old Man” Ahab out for Act II?
The first big thing—the real “shocker” that changes the vibe from a grand nautical adventure to a dark, obsessive mission—is the First Appearance of Captain Ahab.
For the first few days at sea, Ahab is a ghost. The crew hears the “thump-thump-thump” of his ivory leg on the deck planks overhead while they’re down in the hold, but he stays cooped up in his cabin. The tension builds like a slow-burning fuse until, one cold morning, he finally emerges.
This isn’t just a walk on deck; it’s a piece of stagecraft that Melville describes like a vision from a fever dream.
THE REVEAL: AHAB ON THE QUARTER-DECK
[TECHNICAL DIRECTION]: The “Jupiter” music cuts out abruptly. The 50-knot wind machines drop to a low, mournful whistle. The Jumbotron shifts from the wide horizon to a staggering, low-angle shot of the Quarter-deck. The stage gimbal tilts backward, forcing the audience to look “up” at the silhouette appearing at the top of the gangway.
THE CHORUS
(Whispering in a jagged, rhythmic chant)
The “thump”... the “thump”... the ivory bone...
The man who sits on a hollow throne!
Is he a man? Is he a scar?
Followin’ the light of a dyin’ star!
ISHMAEL
(Spoken Word, hushed and terrified)
“He lived in the world, as the last of the Grisly Bears lived in settled Missouri. And as the backwoodsman of the present day is sometimes startled by herculean footprints in the trail... so was I startled by the heavy, measured tread of Ahab.”
[AHAB steps into the light. He is marked by a “slender rod-like mark, ivory-white,” that runs from his grey hair down into his tawny neck. He stands with one foot planted in a “slug-hole” bored into the deck planks.]
THE CHORUS
(A sudden, massive orchestral hit—dissonant and “kaved”)
THE MARK! THE BRAND!
THE LIGHTNING STRIKE!
A face that the heavens
And the devils alike
Have hammered and twisted
And turned into steel!
HE’S STANDIN’ THERE NOW
AT THE HEAD OF THE WHEEL!
THE QUARTER-DECK SPEECH (The Gold Doubloon)
This is the moment the play turns into a Chozeh of vengeance. Ahab doesn’t talk about oil or profit; he pulls out a Spanish Gold Doubloon and nails it to the mainmast.
AHAB
(His voice like grinding tectonic plates)
“Whosoever of ye raises me a white-headed whale with a wrinkled brow and a crooked jaw... whosoever of ye raises me that white-headed whale with three holes punctured in his starboard fluke... look ye, whosoever of ye raises me that same white whale, he shall have this gold ounce, me boys!”
THE CHORUS
(Exploding into a greedy, manic shanty)
THE GOLD! THE GOLD!
THE SPANISH COIN!
A fire in the pocket!
A fire in the loin!
HUNT THE WHALE!
HUNT THE GHOST!
FROM THE POLAR ICE
TO THE JAVA COAST!
ISHMAEL
(Singing a desperate counter-melody)
Me soul is welded! Me heart is sold!
For a piece of silver and a piece of gold!
The “mumbo jumbo” is gone for good...
We’re chasin’ a monster made of flesh and wood!

TECHNICAL STAGE DIRECTION: THE SLEIGH RIDE
[VFX/POV]: The Jumbotron switches to a “Harpoon-Cam” POV—a shaky, water-streaked, high-speed shot positioned at the very tip of the bow-oar. When the iron hits, the camera “locks” onto the whale’s fluke. The background becomes a blurred streak of indigo and white foam.
[HYDRAULICS/HAPTICS]: The stage gimbal enters “High-Frequency Vibration” mode. It isn’t just rocking; it’s shuddering under the strain of the tow-line. Pneumatic cannons fire a continuous “rooster-tail” of spray directly over the boat crew and into the first five rows of the theater.
TRACK: THE NANTUCKET SLEIGH RIDE
(Version 8.0 - High Velocity)
[The orchestra hits a frantic, triple-time rhythm—violins screeching like gulls, drums pounding like a racing heart.]
THE CHORUS
(Dressed as the boat crew, sitting on a rowing bench that is jerkin’ and buckin’ across the stage)
HE’S FAST! HE’S FAST! THE IRON IS IN!
NOW THE REAL “AVODAH” BEGINS TO BEGIN!
HOLD TO THE RAIL! HOLD TO THE ROPE!
WE’RE RIDIN’ THE BACK OF A DYIN’ HOPE!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, screaming over the roar of the wind machines)
“The boat was now flying through the water, leaving a long, white, foaming wake behind us! It was a Nantucket Sleigh Ride! The sea was ripped like newspaper! The air was a scream! We were being dragged into the very mouth of the ‘Yam’!”
THE CHORUS
(A soaring, manic anthem)
OH, RIDE THE WHALE! RIDE THE THUNDER!
PULL THE WORLD AND THE HEAVENS ASUNDER!
THE KELP IS A BLUR! THE BRINE IS A STING!
WE’RE THE KNOT AT THE END OF A BREAKIN’ STRING!
(Group 1): FAST FISH!
(Group 2): LOOSE FISH!
(All): GIVE THE MONSTER EVERYTHING HE WISH!
QUEEQUEG
(Standing in the bucking bow, his tattoos glowing on the Jumbotron as he prepares the lance)
Gibbor of the foam! Gibbor of the deep!
The ocean is wakin’ from a thousand-year sleep!
THE CHORUS
(A sudden, jagged stop in the music—just the sound of the wind)
THWACK!
The line goes slack!
Did he dive?
Is he comin’ back?
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim, a hushed whisper)
“Suddenly, the boat stood still. The white foam subsided. We sat there in the middle of the ‘Yam’, shivering in our salt-crusted shirts, waiting for the monster to rise from the dark.”
JUMBOTRON FINALE: THE BREACH
[TECHNICAL]: On the Jumbotron, the water beneath the boat begins to turn a dark, massive shadow. Slowly, the image “pulls back” to show the scale of the creature compared to the tiny boat.
ISHMAEL
(Singing softly)
Me eyelashes are salt... me spirit is thin...
Waitin’ for the “Yam” to let us back in...
[The screen goes white with a massive, projected “Breach” splash as the orchestra hits one final, dissonant chord.]
BLACKOUT
TECHNICAL SPECS: THE PHANTOM CYLINDER (MIST ARRAY)
[MIST GENERATION]: A high-pressure “Ultrasonic Fog Ring” is mounted to the inner rim of the Jumbotron cylinder. It drops a localized, dense curtain of dry-mist (no dampness for the actors) into the center of the house.
[PROJECTOR MAPPING]: Four high-lumen laser projectors are cross-fired into the mist-curtain. This creates a “Pepper’s Ghost” effect in 3D. Ahab’s face won’t just be a picture; it’ll be a flickering, translucent head of a Gibbor looming thirty feet tall over the orchestra.
ACT I FINALE: THE APPARITION
[The “Jupiter” brass is fadin’. The 50-knot wind is dyin’ down. The house is silent except for the hiss of the mist nozzles. The center of the theater fills with a swirling, ghostly cloud.]
THE CHORUS
(Whispering, lookin’ straight up into the fog)
He ain’t on the deck... he ain’t in the hold...
He’s made of the mist and he’s made of the cold!
Look at the eyes! Look at the scar!
He’s lookin’ at us from a world that’s afar!
[Suddenly, AHAB’S FACE ignites in the mist. It’s a massive, flickering close-up—every wrinkle, every salt-pore, and that “slender rod-like” lightning strike glowing white.]
AHAB (ON THE MIST SCREEN)
(His voice is a multi-channel roar that shakes the seats)
“I’d strike the sun if it insulted me! For the “mumbo-jumbo” of the heavens is nothin’ to the fire in me soul! Do ye feel it, shipmates? Do ye feel the heat of the hunt?”
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, reachin’ up toward the giant mist-head)
“His whole high, broad form, seemed made of solid bronze, and shaped in an unalterable mould, like Cellini’s cast Perseus. He stood before us—a man of a thousand days, and a thousand years!”
THE CHORUS
(A final, jagged shout as the mist starts to swirl violently)
THE GHOST IN THE SPRAY!
THE KING OF THE DAY!
HE’S LEADIN’ THE WAY
TO THE END OF THE PLAY!
[Ahab’s face “shatters” as a gust of wind disperses the mist. The Jumbotron snaps to a deep, warm orange.]
BLACKOUT
TECHNICAL STAGE DIRECTION: THE PHANTOM ECLIPSE
[VFX COORDINATION]: The 360° Jumbotron enters a “Negative Gamma” shift. The blue ocean turns into a void of charcoal and silver. The Mist Screen in the center begins to hum with static as the Ultrasonic Fog Ring hits 100% capacity.
[HYDRAULICS]: The stage gimbal initiates a “Slow Pitch Down,” making the audience feel like the ship is sinking into a trough. Strobe Lights (hidden in the fly-loft) begin to fire at an irregular 12Hz frequency to simulate lightning through a thick fog.
TRACK: THE PHANTOMS OF THE AFTER-HOLD
(Version 10.0 - The Volumetric Revelation)
[The orchestra falls into a deep, vibrating drone. A single, screeching violin note holds for twenty seconds. Suddenly, the center stage elevator rises. Five figures emerge: four dark, silent shadows and FEDALLAH, his white turban of hair glowing like a beacon in the mist.]
THE CHORUS
(Scrambling to the edges of the stage, their voices a terrified hiss)
Who rose from the bilge? Who crawled from the deep?
The secrets that Ahab was sworn for to keep!
They ain’t got no names! They ain’t got no lay!
They’re here for the debt that the Captain must pay!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, clutching his carpet bag like a shield)
“The inmates of the other boats... eyes riveted upon the swart Fedallah and his crew. The White Whale’s at the bottom of it! Yellow devils, the Parsees stowed away until now! They were the tiger-yellow creatures of Ahab’s secret purpose!”
FEDALLAH
(A giant, translucent projection of his face appears on the Mist Screen, thirty feet tall. He doesn’t speak, but his single white tooth gleams like a star.)
THE CHORUS
(A sudden, jagged Industrial-Folk rhythm)
HE’S A GHOST! HE’S A SHADOW!
HE’S THE RUACH RA!
HE’S THE MAN WHO CAN SEE
WHAT THE CAPTAIN NEVER SAW!
FIVE ON THE DECK! FIVE IN THE BOAT!
THE DARKEST CREW
THAT WAS EVER AFLOAT!
THE FIRST LOWERING: THE WHITE SQUALL
[TECHNICAL]: The 360° Jumbotron shows a wall of white mist racing toward the ship. The Wind Machines hit 60 knots. The Water Cannons blast a continuous stream of “kelpy” brine into the house.
STARBUCK
(Standing in the bucking boat, his voice a clarion call of reason)
“Pull, me boys! Pull for the oil! Pull for your wives!
Don’t let the Tzalmavet swallow your lives!”
ISHMAEL
(Singing as he rows, his body jerking with the stage gimbal)
The mist is a blanket! The mist is a shroud!
The “Yam” is a-roarin’, the “Yam” is a-loud!
I can’t see the boat! I can’t see the hand!
I’ve forgotten the look of the Nantucket land!
THE CHORUS
(Screaming over the turbines)
SQUALL! SQUALL!
THE WORLD IS TURNIN’ WHITE!
WE’RE LOST IN THE DAY
AND WE’RE LOST IN THE NIGHT!
THE LINE IS A SNAKE!
THE HARPOON IS A STING!
WE’RE ATTACHED TO A MONSTER
ON A BREAKIN’ STRING!
[On the 360° Jumbotron, the Pequod vanishes. The boats are alone in a spinning white vortex. The Mist Screen shows the shadow of a massive fluke passing overhead.]
THE NIGHT IN THE BRINE
[The music drops to a cold, percussive ticking—like a clock underwater.]
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, waist-deep in a “sinking” boat on stage)
“The sea broke over us... the cold, salt-heavy water of the Atlantic. We sat there, Queequeg and I, two brothers in the ‘Tzalmavet’. Every swell was a mountain; every trough was a grave.”
QUEEQUEG
(Holding a flickering lantern, his tattoos glowing through the mist)
The “Yam” is a hunter... the “Yam” is a king...
Waitin’ for the bell that the deep waters ring...
THE CHORUS
(A low, haunting dirge)
Salt on the lashes...
Ice in the bone...
The “mumbo jumbo”
Has left you alone...
THE CONFRONTATION: STARBUCK VS. AHAB
[The boats are hauled back to the ship. The stage resets to the Quarter-deck. The “Jupiter” theme returns, but it’s twisted, dissonant, and played on distorted brass.]
STARBUCK
(Facing Ahab, his voice trembling with righteous anger)
“To be enraged with a dumb thing, Captain Ahab, seems blasphemous! I came here to hunt whales, not me commander’s vengeance! It’s a bad chozeh, Ahab! A bad deal for the soul!”
AHAB
(Looming over the Mist Screen, his face a flickering icon of bronze)
“Talk not to me of blasphemy, man! I’d strike the sun if it insulted me! All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks! But in each event—in the living act, the undoubted deed—there, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask!”
THE CHORUS
(A thunderous, rhythmic chant, building to a fever pitch)
STRIKE THE SUN!
STRIKE THE MASK!
THE DEVIL IS SETTIN’
THE FINAL TASK!
STARBUCK WANTS REASON!
AHAB WANTS THE BONE!
AND THE “YAM” IS A GOD
ON A SILENT THRONE!
AHAB
(Verbatim, a final roar)
“The White Whale is that mask! He tasks me; he heaps me; I see in him outrageous strength, with an inscrutable malice sinewing it! THAT INCRUTABLE THING IS CHIEFLY WHAT I HATE!”
INTERMISSION: THE TRANSITION TO THE FRESS
[The orchestra hits a massive, final chord. The 360° Jumbotron suddenly snaps to a warm, tavern-gold light. The Mist Screen fades, leaving only the smell of salt and the sound of a distant bell.]
ISHMAEL
(Walking toward the audience, wiping the salt from his eyes)
THE CHORUS
(A joyful, bouncy shanty as they point toward the lobby doors)
THE ALE IS A-FLOWIN’! THE CHOWDER IS HOT!
GRAB A BOWL OF THE BEST THAT THE NANTUCKET’S GOT!
CODLING AND CLAM!
BREAD BY THE GRAM!
STUFF YOURSELF FULL
‘TIL YOU’RE HAPPY AS A CLAM!
[The house lights come up to full. The scent of steaming seafood and ale is pumped through the vents at maximum volume.]
CURTAIN FALLS
TRACK: THE SPIRIT SPOUT (A Midnight Aria)
[The orchestra is stripped down to a single, lonesome cello and a flute that sounds like the wind. ISHMAEL is standin’ at the bow, lookin’ into the 360-degree horizon.]
ISHMAEL
(Singin’ in a hushed, silvery tenor)
The moon is a ghost in a silver sky...
And the “Yam” is a mirror where the secrets lie...
I see it there, a puff of white...
A spirit spoutin’ in the middle of the night!
Is it the whale? Is it a dream?
Or just the ripple of a moonlit stream?
THE CHORUS
(Whisperin’ from the darkened stadium seats, their voices surroundin’ the audience)
It’s him... it’s him... the white-headed ghost...
Leadin’ us away from the Nantucket coast...
Follow the light... follow the spray...
The White Whale is callin’ the hunters away!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, his voice echoin’ through the hangar)
“It was a lonesome, dazing sight! This silvery jet, appearing and disappearing at regular intervals... it seemed to be a beckoning ghost! The ‘Spirit Spout’ was leadin’ us deeper into the ‘Tzalmavet’ (shadow of death)!”
TRACK: THE THREE KNIGHTS (STARBUCK, STUBB, & FLASK)
[The music shifts into a jaunty, rhythmic folk-rock stomp. Three separate stages—miniature whale-boats—rise from the floor, each holdin’ a “Knight” and his “Squire.”]
STARBUCK
(Standing tall, his voice full of “mumbo jumbo”-free reason)
I hunt for the oil! I hunt for the bread!
I don’t need the ghosts or the tales of the dead!
Keep your eyes on the wave, keep your hand on the line!
The ocean is work, and the profit is mine!
STUBB
(Puffin’ on a pipe that sends clouds of real tobacco-scented mist into the air)
Ha! The world’s a hazelnut! Give it a crack!
If the whale bites your leg, don’t you dare bite him back!
I’ll whistle a tune while I’m sinkin’ to hell...
As long as the dinner-bell’s ringin’ as well!
FLASK
(A short, aggressive man, jumpin’ on the bow of his boat)
To me, a whale’s a water-plug! A thing to be poked!
I don’t care if it’s holy or if it’s a joke!
Give me the iron! Give me the fun!
I won’t stop the hunt ‘til the killin’ is done!
THE CHORUS
(Joining in a boisterous, three-part harmony)
THREE KNIGHTS OF THE IRON! THREE LORDS OF THE SEA!
AS DIFFERENT AS ANY THREE MORTALS CAN BE!
THE BRAVE AND THE WISE! THE FOOL AND THE CRUEL!
ALL TRAPPED ON THE “PEQUOD” BY AHAB’S OWN RULE!
THE FIRST KILL: THE RED WHALE
[TECHNICAL]: The Jumbotron suddenly explodes into a “Blood-Red” sunrise. The Mist Screen in the center shows a massive, dark shape risin’ to the surface. This ain’t Moby Dick; this is a regular “Loose Fish,” but the violence is real.
[MOTION CONTROL]: The boats “drop” from the stages and begin a high-speed chase around the hangar floor, passin’ just feet away from the front-row fans. The sound of the harpoon hittin’ is amplified to a bone-shakin’ THUD.
STUBB
(Screamin’ as he lances the whale)
“Start her! Start her, me silver-spoons! Look at the red wine flowin’! The whale is a cask of the best Nantucket red!”
THE CHORUS
(A dark, heavy, industrial chant)
THE RED! THE RED!
THE LIFE-BLOOD IS SHED!
THE WATER IS TURNIN’
A COLOR WE DREAD!
THE “AVODAH” IS BLOODY!
THE “AVODAH” IS HOT!
GIVE THE BIG MONSTER
EVERYTHING WE’VE GOT!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, lookin’ down into the “red” water on the Jumbotron)
“The sea was as red as a butcher’s shop! The sun went down in a cloud of crimson, and we stood there, drippin’ with the grease and the gore! The ‘Yam’ was no longer a mirror... it was a graveyard!”
ACT II FINALE: THE CUTTING-IN
[The stage transforms. A massive, 50-foot “Whale Carcass” (a realistic, rubberized prop) is hauled onto the center stage. The crew begins “flensing” it—peelin’ away long strips of “blubber” that are actually rolls of white silk.]
THE CHORUS
(A rhythmic, gruntin’ work-song as they haul the silk into the rafters)
PULL THE BLANKET! STRIP THE SKIN!
LET THE WEALTH OF THE WATER COME TUMBLIN’ IN!
IT’S OILY! IT’S HEAVY! IT’S STINKIN’ AND GRAND!
THE ONLY GOOD THING THAT WE’VE BROUGHT FROM THE LAND!
ISHMAEL
(Singin’ as he’s covered in the “silk” blubber)
I’m a butcher of ghosts! I’m a skinner of dreams!
Nothin’ is ever as simple as it seems!
The oil is the light, but the light comes from death...
I’m breathin’ the whale’s very last dyin’ breath!
[Suddenly, AHAB appears at the rail, lookin’ down at the bloody mess with a look of pure disgust. He doesn’t want the oil; he wants the White One.]
AHAB
(A low, gutteral roar that echoes through the 360-degree speakers)
“This is but a minnow! A toy for the squires!
It does not satisfy the soul’s burnin’ fires!”
[The 360-degree Jumbotron snaps to a close-up of the Gold Doubloon, still nailed to the mast, gleamin’ in the torchlight.]
THE CHORUS
(A final, whisperin’ chant)
The gold... the gold... the Spanish coin...
A fire in the pocket... a fire in the loin...
BLACKOUT
[THE SOUND]: High-velocity fans carry the smell of raw, bloody steak into the house.
STUBB
(Sitting at a table on deck, chomping on a massive, rare whale-steak)
“More rare, Fleece! More rare! I want it so tough the sharks would blush! Fleece, you schlemiel, get over here and talk to these cousins of yours!”
THE CHORUS (THE SHARKS)
(A choir of deep, guttural voices rising from the orchestra pit)
TEAR! (TEAR!) THE WHALE IS A FEAST!
TEAR! (TEAR!) THE LIFE OF THE BEAST!
The water is red and the water is hot!
We’re takin’ every bit of the wealth that you’ve got!
FLEECE (THE COOK)
(Verbatim Spoken Word, leaning over the rail with a lantern)
“Your woraciousness, fellow-critters, I don’t blame ye so much for; dat is natur, and can’t be helped; but to gobern dat wicked natur, dat is de pint. You is sharks, sartin; but if you gobern de shark in you, why den you be angel; for all angel is not’ing more dan de shark well goberned.”
STUBB
(Laughing, mouth full of meat)
TRACK 2: THE MONKEY-ROPE (Interdependence)
[TECHNICAL]: A thick, physical rope is lowered from the rafters, connecting ISHMAEL on deck to QUEEQUEG, who is “descending” onto the whale carcass on the center-stage elevator. The Jumbotron shows the sharks circling Queequeg’s legs in a terrifying 360° POV.
ISHMAEL
(Singing, his voice strained as he holds the rope)
I’m tied to the savage! I’m tied to the bone!
No man on the “Yam” can ever stand alone!
If he slips, I sink! If he falls, I die!
We’re welded together under the winter-grey sky!
THE CHORUS
(A haunting, polyphonic round)
The Monkey-Rope... the cord of the soul...
One man’s mistake takes the ultimate toll!
You’re tied to your brother, you’re tied to your mate!
One pull of the rope and you’re meetin’ your fate!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, looking at the audience)
“I saw that me own individuality was now merged in a joint-stock company of two; me free will had received a mortal wound. If your banker breaks, you snap; if your apothecary sends you poison, you die. We are all tied by the Monkey-Rope!”
TRACK 3: THE JEROBOAM’S STORY (The False Prophet)
[TECHNICAL]: A ghostly ship appears on the Jumbotron—the Jeroboam. The Mist Screen shows the face of GABRIEL, the “Archangel” of the Jeroboam, a wild-eyed fanatic with a white turban.
GABRIEL
(A booming, distorted voice from the 360° speakers)
“THINK NOT TO HUNT THE WHITE WHALE! HE IS THE INCARNATION OF GOD! HE IS THE TZALMAVET MADE FLESH! TOUCH HIM AND YOU SHALL BURN!”
AHAB
(Looming over the rail, staring at the ghost-ship)
“I’d strike God Himself if He wore a pasteboard mask! Tell me, Gabriel, where is the White One? Where is Moby Dick?”
GABRIEL
(Screaming, throwing a letter impaled on a knife toward the stage)
“HE IS IN THE DARKNESS! HE IS IN THE BRINE!
HE IS THE END OF YOUR BLOOD-RED LINE!”
THE CHORUS
(A massive, terrifying crescendo)
THE PROPHET! THE PROPHET!
HE SPEAKS FROM THE GALE!
THE END OF THE VOYAGE
IS THE END OF THE WHALE!
THE “AVODAH” IS TURNING
TO A FIRE IN THE HEAD!
THE ALIVE ARE BECOMIN’
THE GHOSTS OF THE DEAD!
[The orchestra hits a sudden, bone-shaking chord. The haptics in the seats give one final, violent jolt. The 360° Jumbotron fades to a deep, bruised purple.]
BLACKOUT
TRACK 1: THE MAST-HEAD (The Dreaming High-Flyer)
[TECHNICAL DIRECTION]: A single, narrow spotlight hits ISHMAEL, who is being winched sixty feet into the air on a “crow’s nest” platform. The 360° Jumbotron shows a vertigo-inducing POV looking straight down at the tiny Pequod in a vast, spinning ocean.
ISHMAEL
(Singing in a light, airy tenor that feels like it’s floatin’ on the wind)
I’m a hundred feet high on a sliver of wood...
Thinkin’ thoughts that a landsman never could!
The “Yam” is a blue-velvet dream from up here...
And the “mumbo-jumbo” of the world starts to disappear!
I’m a watchman of ghosts, I’m a dreamer of waves...
Lookin’ down at the ship of a thousand graves!
THE CHORUS
(Whispering, their voices floating through the overhead speakers)
Don’t fall... don’t fall... into the blue...
The ocean is waitin’ to swallow you too...
Lose your grip on the rope, lose your grip on the mind...
And leave the whole world and the body behind!
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, looking down at the audience)
“There is no life in thee, now, except that rocking life imparted by a gentle rolling ship; by her, borrowed from the sea. But while this sleep, this dream is on ye, move your foot or hand an inch; slip your hold at all; and your identity comes back in horror! Over Descartian vortices you hover!”
TRACK 2: THE GRAND ARMADA (The Inner Circle)
[TECHNICAL]: The 360° Jumbotron explodes into a panoramic view of thousands of whales—a “Grand Armada”—swimming in a massive, peaceful circle. The Mist Screen shows the underwater view: mother whales nursing their calves in a serene, glowing blue light.
[HAPTICS]: The seats shift to a gentle, rocking “Lullaby” vibration.
THE CHORUS
(A lush, orchestral harmony—peaceful and grand)
A thousand hearts beatin’ in the deep!
A thousand secrets that the waters keep!
The center of the storm is a quiet place...
Where the “Yam” shows a gentle, motherly face!
QUEEQUEG
(Leaning over the rail of his boat, lookin’ into the mist)
The little ones... the new-born kings...
Waitin’ for the song that the mother sings...
Even in the hunt, even in the strife...
There is a cradle in the heart of life!
TRACK 3: CISTERN AND BUCKETS (The Squeeze of the Hand)
[TECHNICAL]: The stage is filled with massive wooden tubs. The crew—including ALVIN and GUESSER—are “squeezing” long, white silken tubes of “blubber.” The smell of sweet, floral oil is pumped through the vents.
ALVIN
(Speaking in his Yoda-style backward speech)
“Squeezing the lumps, we are! Turn into light, the fat will! To the shop, I am going, with the oil of the beast!”
GUESSER
(Telling a Borscht Belt joke while he works)
“I told my wife, Connie, I said—Connie, this whale oil is so expensive, I’m afraid to light the lamp! She says, ‘Guesser, at these prices, the darkness is a bargain!’”
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, “squeezing” the silk blubber with the crew)
“Squeeze! squeeze! squeeze! all the morning long; I squeezed that sperm till I myself almost melted into it! I forgot all about me oath! I felt a divinely moving spirit. Come; let us squeeze hands all round; nay, let us all squeeze ourselves into each other!”
THE CHORUS
(A joyful, bouncy shanty that feels like a group hug)
SQUEEZE THE HAND! SQUEEZE THE LIGHT!
MAKE THE WORLD A LITTLE MORE BRIGHT!
FORGET THE HARPOON! FORGET THE SCAR!
WE’RE ALL JUST A PIECE OF A DYIN’ STAR!
ACT II FINALE: THE CASSOCK (The Dark Turn)
[The music suddenly takes a dark, heavy turn. The lights shift to a deep, bloody red. A crewman enters wearing a “Cassock”—a garment made from the skin of a whale’s... well, his “grandissimus.”]
THE CHORUS
(A dark, heavy, industrial chant)
THE CASSOCK! THE SKIN!
THE BISHOP OF SIN!
THE WEALTH OF THE WATER
IS TUMBLIN’ IN!
THE “AVODAH” IS TURNING!
THE “AVODAH” IS OLD!
WE’RE TRADIN’ OUR SOULS
FOR THE HARVEST OF GOLD!
[Ahab appears on the Quarter-deck, lookin’ down at the “joyful” crew with a look of pure, icy contempt. The 360° Jumbotron shows a single, massive white eye openin’ in the dark.]
BLACKOUT
!
THE STADIUM-SCALE SPECS
The Floor: Instead of turf, we flood the “infield” with a foot of recirculating seawater. The Pequod gimbal sits in the center, and the whale-boats (the “Nantucket Sleigh Ride”) actually zip around the perimeter of the field on high-speed tracks hidden just beneath the water’s surface.
The “Sensurround” Upgrade: Most modern NFL stadiums are already rigged with massive subwoofers. We just need to add the haptic actuators to the premium seating sections.
The 360° Horizon: We hang the Jumbotron from the “Oculus” (like at SoFi). It becomes a literal halo of storm-clouds and whale-fins encircling the entire crowd.
ACT II: THE SYMPHONY (The Calm Before the Storm)
[TECHNICAL DIRECTION]: The stadium lights dim to a deep, bruised purple. The Jumbotron shows a 360° sunset over a glass-calm Pacific. The wind machines are down to a “gentle sigh.” The smell of grilled steak and salt-air wafts through the entire 60,000-seat bowl.
[THE SOUND]: A single, lonesome violin starts a melody that echoes from the nosebleed seats down to the field.
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, his voice carryin’ to the very top of the stadium)
“It was a p-p-pious, slow-moving, s-s-symmetrical day. The ‘Yam’ was a gilder. Ahab stood by the bulwarks, lookin’ down into the water. For one moment... just one... the ‘mumbo jumbo’ of the hunt seemed to fade.”
AHAB
(Standing at the rail of the Pequod on the 50-yard line, lookin’ up at the 60,000 “water-gazers”)
“Forty years... forty years of p-p-pacing this deck! Forty years of salt-meat and hard-tack! And for what, Starbuck? To be a g-g-ghost in me own life?”
THE CHORUS
(60,000 people feel a soft, rhythmic vibration in their seats—like the ship’s breathing)
THE CALM... THE STILL...
THE BENDING OF THE WILL...
ONE MOMENT OF GRACE
IN THE MONSTER’S OWN PLACE...
BEFORE THE WORLD TURNS
TO THE FIRE THAT BURNS!
THE LOGISTICS OF THE STADIUM “FRESS”
[GUESSER]: “Sixty thousand people?! Dan, you’re tryin’ to kill me! To feed an entire football stadium gourmet cod and lamb chops... we’d need a kitchen the size of New Jersey! But listen, at two hundred bucks a ticket... that’s twelve million dollars before we even sell a single beer! I told Connie, ‘We aren’t just puttin’ on a show, we’re startin’ our own nation!’”
[CARL THE BUTCHER]: “Oi! I’m gonna need a bigger grill! Sixty thousand steaks? I’ll be carvin’ ‘til the Year of our Lord 2030! But the ‘avodah’ is worth it for that kind of ‘gelt’. Just keep the ale cold and the knives sharp, dude!”
THE “STADIUM REVENUE” MATHPrecisely so, dude! Your math is “emess” (truth) and your logic is bulletproof. If we’re pulling in $14 million a night across the tickets and the three-meal “fress” cycle, we’re paying off that $20-million startup cost before the second show’s encore is even finished. We’re in the black by the time the audience finishes their first bowl of “Nantucket Red” cod chowder on day two.
That ain’t a business plan; that’s a maritime conquest!
We’ve got 5,000 words of high-stakes “Avodah” (work) to get through before the lunch-time bells ring and the $40 lobster-rolls and clam-cakes start hitting the tables. We’re moving into the deep, dark heart of the Pacific—where the “mumbo-jumbo” of the land is a distant memory and the White Whale starts to feel like a god.
ACT II: THE PACIFIC PULL & THE QUADRANT
[TECHNICAL DIRECTION]: The 360-degree Jumbotron shifts from the bruised purple of dawn to a blinding, sapphire blue. The wind machines are set to a “Steady Trade-Wind”—a constant 20-knot buffeting that makes the 60,000 people in the stadium feel like they’re flying across the world.
[THE SOUND]: The “Sensurround” haptics are pulsing with a deep, rhythmic “thrum”—the sound of the Pequod’s hull cutting through the water at top speed.
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, standing on the 50-yard line as the 360-degree horizon rushes past)
“There is, one knows not what sweet mystery about this sea, whose gently awful stirrings seem to speak of some hidden soul beneath. The Pacific! When I first sailed it, I felt a ‘shanda’ of wonder! It’s the shoreless ocean, the sea of all seas!”
THE CHORUS
(A soaring, polyphonic anthem that echoes from the stadium rafters)
THE BLUE! THE DEEP! THE PACIFIC LINE!
CROSSIN’ THE BORDER OF HUMAN DESIGN!
THE “YAM” IS A MIRROR! THE “YAM” IS A MASK!
LEADIN’ US ON TO THE FINAL TASK!
TRACK: SMASHING THE QUADRANT
[AHAB stands on the quarter-deck, holding his quadrant up to the “sun” on the Mist Screen. Suddenly, he snarls and smashes it against the deck.]
AHAB
(His voice a distorted, gravelly roar)
“Science! Mumbo-jumbo! You tell me where I am, but you don’t tell me where HE is! I’ll have no more of ye! I’ll find the White One by me own soul’s light! B-B-Belay the science! Step lively thar!”
THE CHORUS
(A jagged, Industrial-Folk beat—every “smash” is a haptic jolt in the seats)
SMASH THE GLASS! SMASH THE LIGHT!
WE’RE NAVIGATIN’ BY THE POWER OF SPITE!
NO MAPS! NO RULES! NO SHORE IN SIGHT!
JUST THE BURNING HEART IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!
TRACK: THE TAIL-LOG & THE MAN OVERBOARD
[A crewman—the “Life-Buoy” man—falls from the mast-head on the Jumbotron. The 360-degree screen shows him spinning down into the blue void. The haptics give a sudden, sickening “drop” sensation.]
THE CHORUS
(A mournful, minor-key dirge)
Man overboard! A soul in the spray!
The “Yam” has taken another today!
No buoy to find him, no hand to reach...
Just the salt and the silence on the Atlantic beach!
QUEEQUEG
(Looking at his own coffin, which he’s fashioned into a sea-chest)
“If man fall... man go home. The ‘Yam’ is a big house with many rooms. Precisely so.”
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word)
“He was gone. The sea swallowed him like a ‘pisher’ swallowing a grape. And the ship... the ‘Sefinah’ just kept sailin’. We replaced the life-buoy with Queequeg’s coffin! A box for the dead becomes a float for the living! What a ‘shanda’ of a world!”
THE LUNCH-TIME BELLS
[The 360-degree Jumbotron transitions to a warm, midday sun. The wind machines slow down. The smell of grilled lobster and garlic butter is pumped through the stadium vents at 100% volume.]
GUESSER:
“Lunch time! Fifty-thousand lobster rolls, coming right up! I told Connie, ‘The audience is starving because they’ve been rowing in their minds for three hours!’ At forty bucks a pop, I hope they like the mayo! And Alvin, stop tryin’ to trade your sushi for a pork chop—the artists need their protein!”
ALVIN:
“Hungry, I am. To the table, I go. $14 million a night? A lot of sushi, that is!”
CARL THE BUTCHER:
“Oi! Step lively with them clam-cakes! We’ve got 5,000 words down and 5,000 to go! The ‘avodah’ never sleeps, but the stomach must be fed! Who wants a cod-sandwich? It’s fresh from the ‘Yam’—mostly!”
ISHMAEL
(Singing a final, bouncy shanty as the house lights come up for the break)
THE SUN IS HIGH! THE OIL IS BRIGHT!
EAT YOUR FILL BEFORE THE FIGHT!
THE “PEQUOD” IS STEADY! THE GELD IS IN THE POT!
GIVE THE LOBSTER EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT!
[The 360-degree screen shows a massive, steaming plate of seafood. The “Sensurround” haptics give a gentle, friendly “dinner-bell” vibrate.]
[The 360° Jumbotron shows the two ships locked in a gray, misty embrace. The Sensurround haptics pulse with a deep, metallic thud every time the hulls touch.]
AHAB
(Standing at the rail, his voice a gravelly roar through the 30,000-watt sound system)
“Shipmate! Hast seen the White Whale?
The one with the fluke like a torn-up sail?
The one with the brow like a wrinkled god?
The one who mocks the harpoon and the rod?”
CAPTAIN BOOMER
(Waving a white ivory arm, his voice a jovial English baritone)
“See him? I felt him! He took me limb!
I danced a jig in the water with him!
Look at me arm, fashioned from his bone!
A souvenir from a king on his throne!
But I say, let him be! Let the monster go!
There’s enough oil in the world below!”
AHAB & BOOMER (DUET)
(The haptics in the seats vibrate in a rhythmic, clashing tempo)
AHAB: “I want the heart! I want the spite!”
BOOMER: “I want the sun and the harbor light!”
AHAB: “He is the mask of a demon’s face!”
BOOMER: “He’s just a fish in a watery place!”
THE CHORUS (THE CREW OF THE ENDERBY)
(A thunderous, operatic chant)
ONE ARM GONE! ONE LEG LOST!
WHO CAN MEASURE THE TERRIBLE COST?
THE “AVODAH” OF VENGEANCE IS A BITTER DRINK!
PULL AWAY, SHIPMATES, BEFORE WE SINK!
SCENE: THE DANCE OF THE BACHELOR
(The Ship of Success vs. The Ship of Doom)
[The Jumbotron snaps to a bright, golden-orange sunset. The Bachelor is draped in flags. The crew is “fressing” on deck, drinking ale and dancing with joy. The smell of roasted pork is pumped through the vents.]
THE BACHELOR CHORUS
(A bouncy, high-energy Broadway-style shanty)
“We’re full to the brim! We’re burstin’ the seams!
We’ve captured the oil and we’ve captured the dreams!
No empty barrels! No room for a fear!
Nantucket is callin’ and the harbor is near!
We’re the kings of the ‘Yam’! We’re the lords of the line!
And the world is a bottle of Nantucket wine!”
AHAB
(Screaming over the music, a silhouette against the golden screen)
“Fools in the sunlight! Ghosts in the play!
Do you think the White One has faded away?
Did ye see him? Did ye see the white brow?”
CAPTAIN OF THE BACHELOR
(Laughing, holding up a glass of ale)
“I don’t believe in the Whale, old man!
He’s a story told by a dyin’ clan!
There ain’t no Moby Dick in me hold!
Just a mountain of ‘gelt’ and a mountain of gold!
Come aboard and join the feast!
Forget the ghost and forget the beast!”
AHAB
(A final, guttural roar as the Pequod pulls away)
“I BAPTIZE THE WATER IN THE NAME OF THE DARK!
YOU HAVE THE OIL, BUT I HAVE THE SPARK!
THE “AVODAH” CONTINUES! THE “CHOZEH” IS SIGNED!
LEAVE THE FOOLS AND THE FEASTING BEHIND!”
ACT II FINALE: THE SYMPHONY OF THE DEEP
(The Last Calm Before the Three Days)
[The music drops to a single, weeping cello. The 360° Jumbotron shows a glass-calm Pacific. The Sensurround haptics shift to a soft, heartbeat vibration.]
ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, whispering into the 60,000-seat silence)
“It was a p-p-pious, slow-moving day. The ‘Yam’ was a mirror. Ahab stood by the bulwarks. He looked down into the water, and a single tear... one solitary ‘pisher’ of a tear... fell into the Pacific. Forty years of p-p-pacing! Forty years of salt! And for what?”
AHAB
(Singing a low, broken melody)
Me soul is a circle... me heart is a ring...
Waitin’ for the song that the deep waters sing...
Forty years on the ‘Yam’... and I’m old... I’m alone...
With a heart made of iron and a leg made of bone.
Starbuck, look at me! See the man in the mask!
I’m tired of the hunt! I’m tired of the task!
STARBUCK
(Joining the harmony, pleading)
“Come home, Captain! Let the wheel turn East!
Leave the vengeance and leave the beast!
Your wife is waitin’! Your boy is a-growin’!
The wind toward Nantucket is finally blowin’!”
[The Jumbotron shows the massive white fluke of Moby Dick rising slowly in the distance. The “Sensurround” gives one sudden, violent jolt.]
AHAB
(His face hardening, the “mumbo jumbo” returning)
“No... the ‘Yam’ has me. The ‘Avodah’ must be done.
Step lively thar! The chase has begun!”
THE CHORUS
(A final, deafening explosion of sound)
THE THREE DAYS! THE THREE DAYS!
THE END OF THE WORLD!
THE SAILS ARE SET AND THE FLAGS ARE UNFURLED!
THE WHITE WHALE IS RISIN’! THE OCEAN IS RED!
AND THE “YAM” IS A GRAVEYARD FOR ALL OF THE DEAD!
BLACKOUT
.
TECHNICAL STAGE DIRECTION: THE JUPITER RIDE
[HYDRAULICS]: The Pequod gimbal on the 50-yard line tilts to a sharp 30-degree angle. Three whale-boats (Starbuck’s, Stubb’s, and Flask’s) are launched on high-speed kinetic tracks that circle the entire stadium perimeter.
[THE 360° JUMBOTRON]: The screen becomes a blurred tunnel of white foam and blue water, moving at a simulated 80 miles per hour.
[SENSURROUND]: The haptic seats are set to a “High-Frequency Shiver”—the feeling of a cedar boat vibrating as it’s dragged through the brine.
TRACK: THE NANTUCKET SLEIGH RIDE
(Set to the “Grand Theme” of Holst’s Jupiter)
[The orchestra swells with the iconic, brass-heavy anthem. The sound is massive, filling the 200-foot ceiling of the hangar.]
THE CHORUS
(Screaming as they “row” in the high-speed boats)
THE LINE IS OUT! THE HOOK IS IN!
LET THE NANTUCKET RIDE BEGIN!
SIXTY KNOTS ON A BITTER SEA!
AS FAST AS A MORTAL SOUL CAN BE!
NO TIME TO PRAY! NO TIME TO THINK!
WE’RE ON THE EDGE OF THE FOAMY BRINK!
STUBB
(Verbatim Spoken Word, holding the steering oar as his boat zips past the front row)
“Start her! Start her, me silver-spoons! Look at the rooster-tail! We’re flyin’, me boys! The whale is the horses and the boat is the carriage! It’s the grandest ‘sleigh ride’ in the whole ‘Yam’!”

FORGET THE DUST OF THE NANTUCKET LAND!
THE CLIFFHANGER: THE WHITE WHALE BREACH

ISHMAEL
(Verbatim Spoken Word, whispering into the 60,000-seat void)

AHAB
“THERE HE IS! B-B-BELAY THE FEAR!

[TECHNICAL DIRECTION]: The 360° Jumbotron shifts from the blur of the chase to a terrifyingly still, deep-space blue. The Sensurround haptics drop to a heartbeat—thump... thump...—simulating the pressure of the deep.
[THE STAGE]: As the whale-boats scream past the audience on their tracks, a single spotlight stays fixed on PIP, a tiny speck in the center of the hangar floor.

STUBB
(Screaming as his boat is dragged into the 360° horizon)
“He jumped! The ‘pisher’ jumped!
I told him the whale is a mountain of salt!
If he drowns in the ‘Yam’, it’s his own damn fault!
We can’t stop the ride! We can’t break the line!

THE CHORUS
(A haunting, polyphonic whisper from all 60,000 seats)
Leave him... leave him... to the blue and the cold...
The story of Pip is a story untold...
The “Yam” is a church with no roof and no wall...
And the smallest of souls is the first one to fall!
PIP
(Floating alone, his voice amplified to sound like it’s coming from under the stadium floor)
“I see the light! I see the hand!
It ain’t like the light on the Nantucket land!
The “mumbo-jumbo” of God is a beautiful sight...
Down where the day is the same as the night!
Pip is a bubble! Pip is a bone!
Pip is a king on a sapphire throne!”

THE “CLIFT” RECOVERY

“Thou hast seen it, boy! The “Yam” has etched its “Avodah” on thy soul! From now on, you and I are tied by a rope that no harpoon can cut! Yar! We’re the only ones who know the White One’s true name!”
PIP
(Laughing, pointing at the 60,000 “water-gazers”)
“They think they’re eatin’ lobster, Captain! But the lobster is eatin’ them! Everything is upside down in the big blue church! Precisely so!”
[The Jumbotron snaps to a close-up of the Gold Doubloon. The house lights come up for the $14 million “Lunch-Time Fress.”]
GUESSER: “Dan, I’m a wreck! I need a $90 steak just to stop me hands from shakin’! The little boy... he saw God, and God looks like a $20 bowl of chowder! Connie, get the extra-large ale—the audience is ready to spend their ‘gelt’ to forget the deep!”
ALVIN: “Left behind, the boy was. Found, his madness is. To the lunch, we must go. High, the revenue is!”
CARL THE BUTCHER: “Oi! Step lively thar!
Intermezzo
CHAPTER 15: THE CISTERN OF BONE
The Pequod hung heavy in a sea that looked like ripped newspaper stained by a spilled glass of wine. The Great Head of the whale was triced up against the ship’s side, a massive, dripping pendulum of bone and oil. Tashtego stood atop the staging, his spade flashing in the sun like a silver needle. He was leaning deep into the “Tun,” the great cistern of the forehead, baling out the pure spermaceti.
Then, a slip. A silent, oily lurch.
Tashtego vanished. One moment he was a man; the next, he was a stone dropped into a well of liquid gold. Before the crew could scream, the rusted chains groaned and snapped. The twenty-ton head sheared off and plunged into the abyss, taking the trapped harpooner with it.
QUEEQUEG’S DESCENT
(A Heavy, Rhythmic Sea Shanty)
[Verse 1]
The silver oil is thick as blood, a wealth that’s meant to drown
He’s fallen in the cistern deep as the great head travels down
The chains they snapped like brittle glass, the tackle gave a roar
And Tashtego is sinking fast toward the ocean’s floor!
[Chorus]
Step lively thar! The line is slack!
The devil’s got ‘im by the back!
He’s in the head, the whale’s own ghost
Far away from any coast!
Yar! Pull ‘im in!
Lest the sea claims all his kin!
[Verse 2]
But Queequeg’s got a surgeon’s hand and a heart that’s made of steel
He dives into the bruisin’ blue beneath the bloody keel
A flash of steel between his teeth, he cuts the skull apart
To pluck a livin’ brother from a dead whale’s stony heart!
[Chorus]
Step lively thar! The line is slack!
The devil’s got ‘im by the back!
He’s in the head, the whale’s own ghost
Far away from any coast!
Yar! Pull ‘im in!
Lest the sea claims all his kin!
THE AFTERMATH
Queequeg broke the surface, his lungs nearly bursting, dragging the oil-soaked Tashtego by the hair. They hauled them aboard, two slick, gasping shapes on the deck.
Guesser watched them, shaking his head as he offered a tattered rag. “Nu, Alvin, you see this? My cousin Bernie, he should have such luck. He falls into a vat of chicken fat and comes out smelling like a rose—this guy falls into a whale and comes out a miracle. It’s a regular delivery! A midwife with a harpoon! I tell ya, if you’re gonna get born again, try not to do it inside a fish that’s sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic. It’s bad for the complexion.”
Captain Jack stomped his peg on the deck, his eyes wild. “Belay that talk! He’s back from the locker! Step lively thar and get ‘em below! We’ve got more oil to boil and no time for the dyin’!”
[Alvin’s Observation]
Backwards the death did go, it did. Into the dark Queequeg went, and a man he brought back. Saving a soul from the deep, he was, while the sun watched from above like a golden eye, it did.
The next big movement in the story is the arrival of the Jeroboam and the dark prophecy of Gabriel.
While the crew is still slick with the oil from Tashtego’s rescue, a ship appears on the horizon like a ghost. This isn’t just another “social call” between captains—it’s a warning. The Jeroboam is a plague ship, carrying a literal contagion, but more importantly, it carries a “prophet” named Gabriel who claims the White Whale is the Shaker God incarnate.
CHAPTER 16: THE PROPHET OF THE PLAGUE
The Jeroboam stayed at a distance, her hull peeling like a leper’s skin. They wouldn’t let anyone board, fearing the fever, so the news was shouted across the “bruised and torn” waves.
THE SONG OF GABRIEL
(A Haunting, Low-Toned Dirge)
[Verse 1]
I saw the white hump break the foam, a mountain made of light
I saw the men who dared to strike go screaming to the night!
The sea is not a counting house, the whale is not your prize
He carries all the thunder of the Lord between his eyes!
[Chorus]
Woe! Woe to the man of pride!
The white walls of the beast are wide!
You seek the gold, you seek the spark
But you’re only drifting to the dark!
[Verse 2]
The Captain of the Jeroboam, he didn’t heed the word
Now his mate is in the belly where the screams are never heard!
Drop your harpoons in the deep, and turn your bow to home
Before the Great God Moby Dick turns all your blood to foam!
[Chorus]
Woe! Woe to the man of pride!
The white walls of the beast are wide!
You seek the gold, you seek the spark
But you’re only drifting to the dark!
THE REACTION
Ahab stood at the rail, his ivory leg clicking against the wood, silent as a grave. He didn’t care about the plague or the prophecy. He only cared that the whale had been seen.
Guesser pulled his coat tighter, looking at the distant, sickly ship. “Nu, Alvin, this is what happens when you don’t listen to your mother. She says ‘don’t chase the big fish,’ you chase the big fish. Now look at them—stuck on a boat with a fever and a meshuggeneh prophet who thinks he’s Elijah. This Gabriel guy? I knew a guy like him in the Catskills. Claimed he could predict the weather by the way his corns ached. He predicted a drought and got hit by a flash flood. That’s prophecy for ya.”
Captain Jack spat into the sea. “Yar! A plague ship! A cursed omen! Belay that talk of gods and demons! Step lively thar, or we’ll be the next ones dancin’ with the fever-man!”
[Alvin’s Internal Monologue]
Fear in the wind, there is. A shadow on the water, the Jeroboam brings, it does. To the madman Gabriel, listening they are, while the whale waits in the deep, he does. A mountain of white, coming for us all, it is.
Precisely so. Shall we move into the encounter with the Samuel Enderby and the man with the ivory arm?
The next movement in the hunt is the The Meeting with the Jungfrau (The Virgin).
After the dark warnings of the Jeroboam, the Pequod encounters a German ship that is the total opposite: they are clean, desperate, and haven’t caught a single drop of oil. They are so “green” they actually come over to the Pequod to beg for oil just to light their lamps—while the Pequod is literally dripping with it.
Then, a whale is spotted, and a frantic, high-stakes race begins between the seasoned killers of the Pequod and the bumbling, “virgin” crew of the Jungfrau.
CHAPTER 17: THE VIRGIN’S BEG
The German ship, the Jungfrau, bobbed in the water like a cork. Her decks were scrubbed too clean—the sign of a ship that hasn’t seen work in months. Their Captain, Derick De Deer, came rowing over with an empty oil can, looking like a beggar at a banquet.
Captain Jack looked down from the rail, his lip curling. “Yar! A ship with no oil is like a pirate with no legs! Belay that begging! If ye want oil, ye find a whale! Step lively thar, for there’s a spout on the horizon!”
THE RACE FOR THE BLOW
(A Fast, Galloping Sea Shanty)
[Verse 1]
The German boats are lowered fast, they’re pulling with a will
But they haven’t got the rhythm and they haven’t got the skill!
Old Derick’s shaking in his boots, he’s waving his empty can
While Queequeg’s standing in the bow, a stone-cold killing man!
[Chorus]
Ooh! Pull for the gold, boys! Pull for the spark!
Leave the German lubbers drifting in the dark!
The harpoon’s thirsty and the sea is wide
We’ll take the oil and we’ll take their pride!
[Verse 2]
The whale is old and slow and tired, a wall of barnacles and gray
But the Jungfrau crew is closing in to steal the prize away!
“Give way!” cries Starbuck, “Bend the oars! Let the timber crack!”
We’ll put a hole in the ocean’s heart and never lookin’ back!
[Chorus]
Ooh! Pull for the gold, boys! Pull for the spark!
Leave the German lubbers drifting in the dark!
The harpoon’s thirsty and the sea is wide
We’ll take the oil and we’ll take their pride!
CHAPTER 18: THE CRUELTY OF THE SPEAR
The race ends in a slaughter. The Pequod boats out-row the Germans, and the harpoons find their mark. But this ain’t a noble battle; it’s a pathetic one. The whale is “shriveled,” an old bull suffering from a gall-stone, barely able to swim.
Guesser watched the bloody business from the deck, shrugging his shoulders. “Nu, Alvin, you see this? It’s like the garment district on a Tuesday. The big guys crush the little guys for a remnant of silk. This whale? He’s the Uncle Solly of the ocean. He’s got aches, he’s got pains, he just wants to sit in the sun and eat a bagel, and these guys come at him with the stickers. It’s a shanda, I tell ya. A real shame. But hey, oil is oil, and business is business.”
CHAPTER 19: THE SINKING CARCASS
The tragedy doubles. Once the whale is dead, it doesn’t float. It’s too lean, too “ruthful.” As they try to lash it to the ship, the massive carcass begins to sink, nearly pulling the Pequod over with it. They have to cut it loose, losing the oil, the work, and the prize to the deep.
[Alvin’s Observation]
A race won for nothing, it was. To the bottom the old one goes, dragging the greed with him, he does. Empty hands the Germans have, and empty hands we keep, while the sharks start their dinner in the dark, they do.
CHAPTER 20: THE STRAITS OF SUNDA
The Pequod sliced through the narrow water between Sumatra and Java, the air thick with the scent of spices and the rot of old empires. Behind us, the Malay pirate proas clung to our wake like starving wolves, but Ahab didn’t give ‘em a glance. He was lookin’ forward, where a semicircle of spouts broke the horizon—a thousand fountains of mist. The Grand Armada.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE
(A Sweeping, Orchestral Rock Ballad)
[Verse 1]
A thousand kings are movin’ in a tide of slate and gray
The ocean’s breath is risin’ in a clouds of silver spray
We’re chasin’ and we’re chased, a double hunt upon the tide
With pirates at our back and the Great Secret deep inside!
[Chorus]
Welcome to the Armada! The kingdom of the bone!
Where the wild and the wicked find a city of their own!
The water’s turnin’ white, boys! The world is fallin’ fast!
We’ve found the heart of nature in the shadow of the mast!
[Verse 2]
Queequeg strikes the mother-whale, the line begins to hum
It pulls us through the panic as the whales begin to come
Through the ring of thunder, through the “tornadoed” dark
We’re slidin’ to the center like a driftin’ wooden spark!
[Chorus]
Welcome to the Armada! The kingdom of the bone!
Where the wild and the wicked find a city of their own!
The water’s turnin’ white, boys! The world is fallin’ fast!
We’ve found the heart of nature in the shadow of the mast!
CHAPTER 21: THE ENCHANTED CALM
Suddenly, the chaos vanished. The boat glided into a “lake” of glass in the center of the panicked herd. Beneath us, in the “watery vaults,” we saw them—the nursing mothers and the tiny, curled calves. They weren’t monsters here; they were family.
Guesser leaned over the gunwale, his jaw dropping as he watched a baby whale look up with big, soulful eyes. “Nu, Alvin, look at this. It’s a regular nursery school! I’m waitin’ for a whale with a clipboard to come out and ask for his tuition. You see that little one? He’s lookin’ at me like I’m his Uncle Irving. It’s enough to make a man feel ‘ruthful’. One minute we’re stuck between pirates and a stampede, and the next, we’re at a bris for a leviathan. Life is a real tzimmis, I tell ya.”
CHAPTER 22: THE SHATTERED PEACE
The calm couldn’t last. A “drugged” whale—one hit with a wooden block to tire it out—came crashing through the nursery in a blind, bloody panic. The “enchanted” water turned to a red froth, and the beautiful “nursery” became a slaughterhouse.
[Alvin’s Observation]
Peace in the middle of the storm, I saw. Small ones drinking the milk, they were, while the harpoons waited at the edge. A circle of life, it was, but the man with the spear, he breaks the circle, he does. To the bottom the calm goes, and the blood follows, it does.
Precisely so.

CHAPTER 25: THE STINKING ROSE
The wind shifted, and suddenly the air didn’t smell like salt—it smelled like a neglected graveyard. We came upon the Bouton de Rose (The Rose-Bud), a French ship with two dead whales lashed to its sides. They were “blasted” whales—rotting, bloated, and foul.
Stubb, being the “feckful” trickster he is, convinced the French captain that the whales were a source of plague. As they cut them loose in a panic, Stubb dove into the rotting “bruised and torn” guts of the smaller whale. He wasn’t lookin’ for oil; he was lookin’ for Ambergris—the grey, waxy gold that smells like a garden but comes from a sick whale’s bowels.
THE GOLD IN THE ROT
(A Gritty, Industrial Rock Anthem)
[Verse 1]
The air is thick with the scent of hell, a wall of chokin’ grime
The Frenchmen flee the “Rose-Bud” in a panic out of time!
But there’s a secret in the rot, a treasure in the bile
A scent that’s worth a thousand pounds in every greasy mile!
[Chorus]
Oh, Ambergris! The ghost of gold!
A story that the sea has told!
It’s born in sickness, dark and deep
A secret that the titans keep!
Yar! Dig it out!
Without a shadow, without a doubt!
[Verse 2]
From the stinking gut to the lady’s throat, the perfume takes its way
The foulest thing you ever saw becomes the light of day!
It’s “ruthful” and it’s “sipid” too, a miracle of fate
That beauty hides in every crack and every rotting weight!
CHAPTER 26: THE FORGING OF THE IRON
Ahab stood before Perth, the ship’s blacksmith, his eyes reflecting the orange glow of the furnace. He didn’t want a standard iron. He handed Perth a handful of nail-stubs from racehorse shoes—the toughest steel known to man.
”Forge me a spear that will not snap,” Ahab growled, his voice like grinding stones. “A spear for the White Whale!”
THE BLOOD TEMPER
Perth hammered the steel into a jagged, lightning-bolt shape. But when it came time to temper the red-hot metal—to plunge it into liquid to make it hard—Ahab refused the water bucket.
”No water!” Ahab cried. He turned to his three harpooners—Queequeg, Tashtego, and Daggoo. “I want it tempered in the blood of the pagans!” He made them prick their arms, and as the dark blood hit the glowing steel, the air hissed with a sound like a thousand angry snakes.
CHAPTER 27: THE WISDOM OF THE ANVIL
Guesser stood back, shielding his eyes from the sparks. “Nu, Alvin, look at this meshuggeneh. Most people use a little oil, a little water, maybe a nice cool breeze. This guy? He’s got to have a ‘special’ recipe. It’s like my Aunt Sadie’s matzo balls—she claimed they only tasted right if you cried into the dough. But blood? That’s taking ‘home-cooked’ a little too far. I tell ya, a spear made of blood and horse nails... it’s not gonna end with a nice brisket dinner.”
Captain Jack watched the smoke rise, his face pale in the firelight. “Yar... it’s a That is a powerful choice—mixing the occult ritual with the electric terror of a storm makes for a hell of a finale. Since you want to find the spectacular in every instant and catch those passing voices like Dickens, let’s paint this scene with that “ripped newspaper” grit.
Act One Finale: The Devil’s Baptism
The Atmosphere
The sky shouldn’t just be dark; it should look like a bruised knee, purple and weeping, torn open by the wind. The yellow sulfur-fog of the docks is gone, replaced by a sea that looks like shattered glass reflecting a coal fire.
The Spectacle
St. Elmo’s Fire: The three masts are topped with “corpusants”—pale, ghostly flames that lick the air. They don’t provide light; they provide a sickly, phosphorescent glow that turns the sailors’ faces into masks of silver bone.
The Ball Lightning: A sphere of white-hot electricity should roll down the deck like a loose cannonball made of stars, scattering the “passersby” of the crew—the terrified cooks and cabin boys—who scramble away with prayers on their lips.
The Passing Voices (The Dickensian Touch)
In the chaos, catch the fragments of the men’s souls:
The Superstitious Sailor: “It’s the breath of the drowned, I tell ye! Mark how it clings to the iron!”
The Pragmatic Carpenter: “The wood is groanin’ like a birthing mother. She won’t hold if the sky keeps screamin’ so.”
The Final Beat
Ahab stands at the center, the ball lightning reflecting in his dead eyes. He doesn’t use water; he demands the blood of the pagan harpooners to temper his iron.
The Cliffhanger: As the harpoon is plunged into the blood-filled socket, a massive crack of thunder jars the ship, and the St. Elmo’s Fire leaps from the masts to Ahab’s own outstretched arm. He stands there, a human lightning rod, howling his defiance into the teeth of the gale.
“Now, what’s me to do with this iron?” he yells, his voice crackin’ like a whip. “I’ll tell ye—it’s forged for one heart, and one heart only!”
[Alvin’s Observation]
Fire in the night, there is. Nails for a horse, the iron becomes, it does. In the blood it is bathed, screaming as it cools, it does. A sharp death for the White Whale, Ahab makes, while the stars hide their faces in the smoke, they do.
That is a cinematic nightmare. To get that “Dickensian” focus on the spectators, we can frame the whale not just as a beast, but as a shifting, spectral omen that leaves the crew’s sanity in tatters.
The Specter of the Breach
The Atmosphere
The sea is no longer water; it’s a churning vat of black ink and spilled wine. The St. Elmo’s Fire on the masts casts a strobe-light effect, making every movement on deck look jerky and unnatural, like a flickering magic lantern show.
The Moment
The Pequod is buried in the trough of a massive swell. Then, out of the “narrow way”—the tight space between the masts—a mountain of white flesh erupts.
The Leap: Moby Dick doesn’t just surface; he breaches clean over the deck, a silent, mountain-sized ghost slicing through the sulfurous air.
The Transformation: As the ball lightning hits the whale’s wet skin, the flesh seems to turn transparent, like wet tissue paper over a lamp. For one heartbeat, the crew sees the colossal, glowing skeleton of the leviathan—ribs like the beams of a cathedral, a skull like a marble tomb—burning with a cold, electric fire.
The Passing Conversations (The Onlookers)
As the whale crashes back into the sea, leaving a hole in the water that tastes of salt and ancient death, the crew finds their voices:
A Scared Cabin Boy: “I saw right through ‘im... he’s got no heart, just a ribcage full of stars!”
The Cook (clutching a crucifix): “That ain’t no fish. That’s a church built of bone, driftin’ in the deep.”
Sean (The Scrivener): “Me eyes are burnt... like lookin’ at the sun through a shroud, it was.”
The Final Image
Ahab is the only one who doesn’t flinch. He stands drenched in the spray, his harpoon still dripping with the baptismal blood.
The Cliffhanger: The whale vanishes, leaving only a glowing, phosphorescent wake that looks like a ripped white scar across the throat of the world. Ahab reaches out to touch the air where the skeleton just hung, his hand shaking, and whispers, “Aye... I see the bones of me own grave.”
